Top Pickleball Pro Tyson McGuffin Signs Deal with Apple (no, not that one)

by Jason Flamm on

When this headline came across Tuesday, I did a double-take so quickly that I think I permanently damaged my neck.

It read: "Tyson McGuffin Signs Deal with Apple."

"WOW!" I thought, "Pickleball has done it. We've hit the big time."

Then, I actually read the headline, and what it says is,

"The Perfect Match: Cosmic Crisp® Apples and Pickleball Pro Tyson McGuffin Unite."

He didn't sign with Apple – the tech company. He signed with apples – the fruit. Scratch that. He didn't sign with apples at all.

He signed with one apple. One variety of apples.

The Cosmic Crisp® apple.

(Hold pause to let that sink in.)

It's good for him, I guess. A deal is a deal. Apples are delicious and nutritious, and they probably play a big role in helping him stay fit.

I'm not hating on it. It's awesome.

It just wasn't what I thought it was, and that was a bit of a letdown – as you can probably imagine.

McGuffin has a history with apples

Anyway, Tyson McGuffin, currently the No. 4 ranked Men's Singles player on the PPA Tour and No. 9 ranked Men's Doubles player, has signed a deal to be the spokesperson for one of the top-selling apples on the market.

Our latest Men’s Doubles Power Rankings are out, and while the Johns brothers are still elite, some new faces are quickly making an impression.

According to the press release:

"The partnership will showcase the Cosmic Crisp® apple as part of Tyson's regular routine of healthy eating as he competes on the Pro Pickleball Association (PPA) and Major League Pickleball (MLP) tours, runs his camps, and films it all for the new 'Making McGuffins' YouTube channel."

For Tyson, apples are near and dear to his heart.

"My father was a Washington apple grower, and I've always had a deep appreciation for the hard work and dedication farming requires. It's an honor to partner with the state's best branded apple and bring my family along for the ride."

Get that bread, Tyson – err, I mean that apple.
