APP SoCal Summer Classic Day 3 - Singles
It’s Father’s Day and Day 3 of the APP SoCal Summer Classic. Michelle Esquivel and Jay Devilliers will have an opportunity at individual Triple Crown’s and we have a bracket featuring four players that are some of the most fun to watch in Pickleball.
One half of the Men’s bracket has a collision course set for Gabriel Joseph v. AJ Koller and Frank Anthony Davis v. Daniel Roditi. If you haven’t seen these four play, it will truly make you appreciate the grind of Single’s Pickleball. Jospeh has had Koller’s number in the past. A matchup between him and FAD would be full of highlight reel moments. Whereas, Joseph v. Roditi were there most exciting matches in last weeks bracket. With Joseph sliding all over and Roditi diving for passing shots, it was blood sweat and tears left on the court. Either matchup would be one to watch. On the other side of the bracket, I’m not sure that anyone can stand in the way of the freight train that is Jay Devilliers. Expect to see him in the Winner Bracket Final against whoever can survive their Quarter Final match.
In the Women’s bracket, we will see if Esquivel can ride the high of yesterday’s win to another Gold Medal. She will have to get past her doubles partner Lauren Stratman in the Winner’s Bracket Final in order to advance. A notable first round matchup of Corrine Carr and Jillian Braverman will be one to watch. Braverman is still establishing her name on the tour and first round against the veteran would help her effort. Check back in for updates along the way and catch the action on the livestream.
Winnner's Bracket Finals
Jillian Braverman has certainly established herself today. Taking out Carr and Stratman on her way the to Winner’s Bracket final she is currently up 10-5 in game one and seems to have a stronghold on the match against Esquivel. Her length makes her very difficult pass at the kitchen line. The constant energy and happy feet have been too much for her opponents to handle today. Look for her to keep right on moving to a Gold medal after this strong performance.
The Men’s Winner’s Bracket Final will be Devilliers taking on Joseph. In this match Joseph will face his biggest challenge of the day. He has been able to run down and return most balls today. Facing Devilliers however, each shots seems to have a little more pace and the 6’3″ frame is a little bit harder to pass. That action is coming up next.
Gold Medal Matches
New faces for the Gold Medal Matches this stop of the APP Tour. The Women’s final saw Jillian Braverman taking on Vivienne David, who took out Michelle Esquivel in the Bronze Medal Match. This match saw one of the strangest moments I have seen in a Pro Pickleball Match let alone one for Gold. David took a timeout down 1-3 in the second game. She left the court for the TO and got distracted on the sideline. The allotted minute had passed and after the official called time in and the score, Braverman served 3-1 to a lonely paddle laying on the ground across the net. The audience was stunned, David was taken aback, but “Point” was called and now it was 4-1 Braverman. This point will be talked about all next online and it opened up some questions for me too. If David did not return for the 4-1 serve, could Braverman serve again? Is there a courtesy to waiting for your opponent being ready when the ball is served? Either way the point was scored and Braverman continued to roll taking the match 11-1, 12-10. Congratulations to both Braverman and David on their best finishes on the tour!
The Men’s Final also saw new faces after Gabriel Joseph and JW Johnson teamed up to give Devilliers his two loses, before squaring off against one another in the Gold Medal Match. Joseph’s passing shots were just electric to watch all day. He was firing two handed backhands around opponents with pace and precision. Combined with his ability to reach every ball on the court, he was not going to be beat today. Joseph thought he won the match on and easy put away late in game 2, but he put a little too much juice on the ball and carried out. The drop in momentum allowed Johnson to steal the game and take an early lead in game three. After the side change at 6, it was all Joseph and he finished the match 11-8, 10-12, 11-9. Congratulations again to these two players with their best finishes on the tour. I’m hoping Joseph adds the new gold to his chain collection and wears it in upcoming matches.
Happy Father's Day from The Dink.
