From 'Dodgeball' to Pickleball: Vince Vaughn's New Sports Venture
Vince Vaughn seems to have a thing for niche sports on obscure television networks (ESPN the 'Ocho,' anyone?).
The actor, famous for movies like Dodgeball and Old School (among many other 2000s flicks), has joined the National Pickleball League (NPL) as a majority stake owner of the Coachella Valley Scorpions.
His new venture with the Scorpions aligns with his increasing passion for the sport.
Vaughn has always been a fan of pickleball
In a statement, Vaughn expressed his enthusiasm for his new role: "I have always enjoyed the game, and in meeting Kim, I was impressed with her, not only as a player but her passion and style of coaching. I’m excited to support her and the Scorpions on their journey."
Kim Jagd, a co-owner and member of the team, will continue as a minority owner after the transaction. Jagd, a seasoned NPL competitor, led the Indy Drivers to victory in the league’s inaugural season in the 50-plus league.
She highlighted Vaughn’s enthusiasm and positive energy, which she believes will be instrumental in the team’s development.
"When you’re on the court with Vince, you can feel his energy and excitement for pickleball," said Jagd. "His involvement is an exciting development for the team and will help the Scorpions continue to build their brand both in Coachella Valley and in the broader Southern California area."
NPL is on the rise
The Coachella Valley Scorpions are one of 12 teams in the NPL’s Champions Pro (50+) pickleball league, which has seen remarkable growth since its inception.
The league doubled the number of participating teams in its second season, reflecting the burgeoning popularity of pickleball. This season, the NPL will host events in major cities including Chicago, Cincinnati, Kansas City, and Houston, culminating in the Championship Weekend scheduled for October 17-20.
It's a bold strategy. Let's hope it works out for them.
NPL CEO Paul Bamundo commented on Vaughn’s involvement, emphasizing the impact of his investment on the league and the sport's growth:
"We are thrilled to have an icon like Vince Vaughn illustrate his passion for the game of pickleball by acquiring a majority stake in the Coachella Valley Scorpions. The league has experienced unprecedented growth over the first two seasons, and Vaughn’s investment in our league really underscores the surging interest in the sport in California and across the country."
Adding Vaughn to the ownership group brings star power to the NPL and highlights the increasing appeal of pickleball among a diverse and older audience. As the sport continues to grow, the involvement of high-profile figures like Vaughn is expected to elevate its profile and attract new fans and players alike.
Now, the only question is, can Vaughn drive, drop, lob, Erne, and drive as well as he can dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge?
