On a recent episode of PicklePod, Zane, Thomas, and Matty Pickles discussed which players get pickled the most and who dishes out the most pickles on the pro tour.
After watching the episode, I knew just where to go for more data—Andrew at PickleWave came through in a big way. He created a "Pickles in 2024" data site, giving us all the year's pickling stats.
In those stats (the full leaderboard is at the end of this article), we discovered that there have been 490 (🤯) pickles this year on the pro tours.
And - a little teaser - one player has been responsible for dishing out almost 9 percent of those...
Note: This data covers all main draw results from the PPA and APP Tours in 2024 (including 9th place playoffs for the APP Tour). Withdrawals, forfeitures, and retirements are excluded.
First up, here are those who get pickled the most (while pickling their opponents the least).
Worst Pickle-to-Pickled Ratios
- Maddie Schulte: 1 pickle vs. 12 games pickled – Schulte has faced Anna Leigh Waters (ALW) a lot in 2024. ALW has pickled her four times, including a brutal double pickle in the Orange County Cup women’s doubles event in June.
- Jonny “Pickleball” Andrews: 0 pickles vs. 9 games pickled – A talented player and PPA Tour instructor, Jonny has faced some extremely tough first-round matchups this year, resulting in a rough pickled count.
- Tatiana Ruhl: 0 pickles vs. 8 games pickled – Whether on the APP or PPA Tour, Tatiana has been pickled eight times this year, primarily in women’s doubles. One of those pickles includes a mixed doubles match.
- Jessica Mason: 1 pickle vs. 8 games pickled – Mason has been double-pickled three times this year, rapidly boosting her pickled count. Notably, all of these pickles have come during women’s doubles matches.
- Wes Burrows: 0 pickles vs. 7 games pickled – Burrows has been pickled three times while playing alongside Sam Querrey. Fun fact: he was pickled both with and against Jeff Warnick this year.
Now, let’s get into who has the longest streak of not being pickled and who has the best pickle-to-pickled ratio.
Longest Streak Without Getting Pickled
51 players have not been pickled in 2024, meaning they're all tied at 260 days without being pickled.
Of those players, here are the ones with the most pickles this year:
- Rachel Rohrabacher: 17 pickles
- Jessie Irvine: 9 pickles
- Jill Braverman: 9 pickles
The most dominant players on tour
While avoiding being pickled is impressive, we want to give the most applause to those dominant players who handing out the most pickles to their opponents in 2024.
Anna Leigh Waters: 44 pickles given vs. 1 game pickled – 44 pickles in one year is insane. It also represents 8.97 percent of all pickles given out on the pro tour.
ALW has double-pickled opponents six times this season. The only team to pickle her was Bright and Ignatowich in the mixed doubles finals of the Vizzy Atlanta Slam.
ALW and Ben Johns went on to win the tournament.
Catherine Parenteau: 25 pickles vs. 3 games pickled – With seven singles pickles and one in mixed doubles (with Federico Staksrud), Parenteau has racked up 17 more pickles alongside ALW in women’s doubles.
Notably, two of the three games she got pickled in were courtesy of none other than her partner, Anna Leigh Waters.
Lea Jansen: 22 pickles vs. 2 games pickled – With nine singles pickles and 13 in doubles, Lea’s dominance is clear. Eight of her doubles pickles came with her partner Tina Pisnik.
The only two players to pickle Jansen? ALW and Salome Devidze (both in singles).
Meghan Dizon: 18 pickles vs. 1 game pickled – Meghan has 13 pickles with her women’s doubles partner, Etta Wright. Her single pickle loss came in a mixed doubles match against JW and Jorja Johnson.
Rachel Rohrabacher: 17 pickles vs. 0 games pickled – With three double pickles this year and 11 pickles alongside partner Anna Bright, Rachel has been on fire. She even pickled Milan Rane at the Orange County Cup in singles.
