It’s okay to hit people…with a pickleball. In fact, it’s kind of fun!
Aiming a shot at your opponent is a legitimate strategy. It’s difficult to defend your body! When you hit directly at a person, there’s usually a split second of indecision whether to return the ball as a forehand or a backhand. A split second is all that you need in pickleball!

People are going to get hit, but that’s okay. Nobody likes getting hit, but it’s a part of the game. C’mon…a pickleball doesn’t hurt that much.
Now, there are some general guidelines when hitting at your opponent:
- Keep it under control - Hit at a speed where you have control over where your shot is going
- Don’t do it out of anger - If you’re angry and hit your opponent because of it, that’s not cool
- No head hunting - Aim for the body, but keep it below the neckline
- Say sorry - Even if you don’t mean it
Hitting the ball at your opponent is a legitimate strategy, and people are going to get hit with the ball. It’s a part of the game!
